Eemu windmill Printing version

There is a windmill at the gate of Eemu Farm in Linnuse Village on island of Muhu. It is one of the few functioning windmills in Estonia. Since May 17, 1980 it is a department of Saaremaa Museum. It is situated one kilometre from the Straight Väike Väin and it was built up on its old site by Jüri Ling, who lives in the same village.

The windmill was preceded by the grind-stone. At first water and later wind was used to make it work. The first information about windmills with upright wings dates from the 12th century Western Europe; in Livonia such windmills were known already in 1330. The oldest type of windmill in Europe was the windmill built on a high foundation. Small farm windmills in Western-Estonia and islands are peculiar in peasant architecture, the only parallels could be found in Scandinavia and Western-Finland.

The windmill has no industrial importance, but is a widely known symbol of Saaremaa, that enriches the local landscape and gives evidence of the hard work of our forefathers. You can study the windmill and try to grind flour with the grindstone.
